Grooving to Poptropica music – not just on Virus Hunter Island

Need a little help taking down those big bad viruses? The PHB’s Virus Hunter Island Guide, written by Samwow5 and complete with pictures, is available on our site!

vhi login

Virus Hunter Island is the second to be released with music, sound effects, and a bigger screen (after 24 Carrot, which everyone can now play with the new features). While poking around, I found the man behind the music – Jeff Heim, Poptropica’s music composer, has been busy making music for Poptropica and has even posted some samples on Soundcloud (I hope there’s more to come!):

We’ve heard some of these tracks on 24 Carrot Island, but there’s a few in the mix that suggest Twisted Thicket will be the next to get an upgrade. Also, could the “Carnival Ride” track be an indicator for Monster Carnival Island? Either way, this new music sounds pretty awesome!

Lastly, if you’re having trouble getting scenes to load on Virus Hunter Island, the Creators suggest that you use a different web browser. (They also have more tips for using the new navigation on their blog.)

What’s your favorite Poptropica music track so far?

And now for something completely different: a new iPad/iPhone app coming soon!

Today, the Creators threw a curveball at us. There was no warning beforehand. But they decided to share this with us:

Announcing Poptropica: Forgotten Islands for iOS!

We’re thrilled to announce Poptropica: Forgotten Islands, an all-new Poptropica adventure for iOS. For the first time, Poptropica will be playable on your iPhone or iPad!

Poptropica: Forgotten Islands is an original, standalone game from our friends at Ubisoft, the same people who brought you Poptropica Adventures for Nintendo DS. It will take you on a journey to discover the secrets of Poptropica’s buried past, one artifact at a time. Explore new islands, meet new characters, and take to the skies in a powered-up blimp that gains new abilities as you play! With each new island group, you’ll uncover the hidden history of Poptropica’s forgotten islands.

Poptropica: Forgotten Islands is coming this September and will be playable on iPhones and iPads. We’ll have all the details right here!

An iPad/iPhone app game?! Forgotten Islands?! How many of you guys saw this coming? I don’t think you guys did. But the way the title is phrased

“Forgotten Islands”. Could
. Monster Carnival
 be
 one of the forgotten islands in this new iPad game?! Now that I think about it, I remember that post with the looking through long forgotten ideas

Captain Crawfish has said “You never know, I guess.” Holy cow. After years, could we finally be getting our lost island in a way? What other lost islands could we be getting in this new adventure? What themes will we explore? What does upgrading our blimps in the app do? Only one way to find out the answers: wait for the news.

BT out with this exciting news!

Checking on those Contagious Predictions

Virushunter

I don’t know how many of you remember my earlier post called A Contagious Prediction. But I did make some very observant (if I may say so myself) observations about what Poptropica’s newest island (Virus Hunter) would be like. Let’s take a look at what I thought.

  • There is a man named Joe Stockman
  • Joe lives on Virus Hunter Island (the cards say so)
  • He won a trip abroad (travel rating card) and (You Won! envelope)
  • On his trip abroad, he acquired a foreign disease
  • It is our job to cure that disease
  • The common room could be Bob’s Place Barbeque (coupon)
  • Lastly, maybe the disease isn’t a real disease
 what if it’s
 nanobots?

I also mentioned that Green Square is a reference to RedBox but that has nothing to do with it. And I said that the Daily Pop sneak peek of a home was Joe’s home, which it could be, but was never incorporated into the island.

Heres where I was right.

  • Joe Stockman is in fact Patient Zero, the man who acquired a disease on his trip abroad.
  • And yes, it is our job to cure the disease (by zooming around his body like we’re Captain Kirk)

Here’s where I was wrong.

  • The common room was not, in fact, Bob’s Place Barbeque. It was a town hall.
  • And the virus was just a deadly plague, not robotic of any kind.

VH21

In an even earlier post I mentioned the lockers found in the apartment with the names of the Creators on them.

It turns out that was incorporated into the island.

So that’s it. Remember, this was back in April, so good job, me!

Also, there’s a new ad on Main Streets (such as on Back Lot Island) for Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2, in theaters September 27. (Thanks, jpf0904 & ayman351.) What you’ll need to do is cross the Breakfast Bog by jumping on platforms. Watch out for obstacles, and every time you land in the honey, keep clicking until you pull yourself out.

At the end, you’ll receive two prizes – a Piece of Cake! power that gives you a cake costume until you turn it off, and a costume (Sam Sparks for girls; Flint for boys). Enjoy!

The Forgotten Islands app and first PopTopics book are here!

$

Hey guys! It’s been so long!! :D The SATs are coming up and school has begun, but I’ve resurfaced to tell you that the Forgotten Islands App is OUT! Check it out!

UPDATE: The PHB’s complete Forgotten Islands iOS Game Walkthrough is now available!

Poptropica: Forgotten Islands features an original storyline that spans several new island groups. Dig through the past to discover relics that reveal Poptropica’s hidden secrets. But watch out for competing explorers, natural threats, and the artifacts’ unfriendly owners!

Besides the main quest, there are dozens of new characters, several randomly generated sidequests, and a blimp-load of new outfits that you can earn. Plus, for the first time ever, you can upgrade your blimp to traverse ever more dangerous environments.

From what I can deduce from the video, it looks very different! Instead of gaining credits from completing Islands, you can collect floating coins:

coins

There seem to be a variety of islands, with names like Flotsam (meaning wreckage):

flotsam

The navigation looks like something similar to Skullduggery when you take on the open seas — except this time in your magic school bus blimp! Aside from that mentioned above, you can also customize your character with some all new costumes and some old ones, using the coins you have collected!

customizable

Here’s the catch: To play this all new adventure, you have to pay $4.99 on the Apple Store. Seems reasonable, seeing as how they need funding, but I’ve never seen an app where you had to pay that much on iOS ever. But who knows? They put a lot of work into this.

~~~
On a lesser note, the Creators have released a non-fiction book series called PopTopics. These books will talk about the topics that have inspired our Poptropica experience (clever naming, by the way :D ). The first one is on Mythology!
The first book, Poptopics: Mythology, gives you the inside scoop on the Greek legends that gave rise to Mythology Island. You’ll discover what we got right, what we got wrong, and what we left out. You might be surprised to find that truth is stranger than fiction!
Sounds interesting! For all the mythology buffs out there, this sounds like the perfect book for you! :)
Speaking of which, the Creators have hinted at more books: from “space travel” (Lunar Colony) to “monsters” (Cryptids), and even the Wild West (well, this is self-explanatory ;) )!
~~~

Well, I’m off. Hope you guys enjoy playing The Forgotten Islands!

Parting is such sweet sorrow,
That I shall say good night till it be morrow.

Scifi Doctor costume & Forgotten Islands (iOS) Guide

$

Hey virus hunters! There’s a new free prize available for everyone on the vending machine on Virus Hunter Island’s Main Street – a Scifi Doctor costume. Last week’s Hazmat Suit is now sold out.

scifi doctor

Next week’s costume, available starting on the 12th, looks like a helmet that will be for members only. The week after that (Sept 19th) will have a final mystery prize for everyone, so be sure to check back! Virus Hunter Island releases to all on September 26, 2013.

—

As you may have seen, the new iOS game Poptropica: Forgotten Islands is now available in the iTunes App Store for US$4.99! The PHB has a full walkthrough complete with pictures available, so if you need help or if you just want to see for yourself what the game is like, please check it out!

Personally, I thought the actions were a bit repetitive, mostly fetch quests with the item you needed lying in plain sight, so the game wasn’t very challenging. The story, which involves finding lost artifacts to uncover Poptropica’s past, wasn’t too bad. No Monster Carnival, sadly (even though this is the one forgotten island we all want to know about!).

Have you played the game yet? Tell us what you think in the comments section!

Although Virus Hunter Island was initially released without a members’ bonus quest, one is on its way! It will be ready on September 26, when the island is released to the public. This heartworming (not to be confused with heartwarming) sneak peek might whet your appetite:

Members can also collect their free X-ray Visor from the Virus Hunter vending machine this week. Pressing space bar while wearing it lets you see people’s skeletons, quite like the Skeleton Power in the Store. The Scifi Doctor is no longer available.

There’s two new mini-ads on Back Lot Island: (1) a cart advertising Poptropica: Forgotten Islands (the iOS game, which we have a PHB walkthrough for), and (2) a video trailer for Liv and Maddie, premiering Sunday, September 15 at 8p/7c on Disney Channel. Watching the video gets you the Liv and Maddie Twin Power, where a clone of your character follows you around! (Thanks, ayman351!)

Also, remember the personalized Poptropica clothing you can buy online from the Poptropica Shop? It now comes in adult sizes as well, so even in the bigger players can wear them!

Wander and hunt for Poptropica’s 6th birthday treasures!

Poptropica celebrates its sixth birthday this month, and as the Creators pointed out, that means it’s old enough to sign up for a Poptropica account! Except it’s Poptropica, so that would be silly.

Anyway, you can pick up a free color-changing 6th b’day balloon in the Store, find balloons floating in the common rooms, and if you pop the occasionally-appearing “6″ balloon, you’ll get the 6th Birthday Costume* with a snazzy spinning hat! (Press spacebar and the 6 will pop out and spin.)

*also available in the Store for members (limited edition)

Also, there are a couple new mini-ads on Main Streets. A Wander Over Yonder (Fridays at 9p/8c on Disney) video ad can be found on Early Poptropica – watch the video for a Wander Over Yonder Hat!

Back Lot Island has a building for Treasure Hunters, an illustrated novel by James Patterson and Chris Grabenstein (you can read ten chapters for free!). You can claim two free prizes in the middle of the second floor – a Pirate Attack Power and Undersea Diving Power.

By the way, if you haven’t already redeemed it, you can enter the promo code POP6BIRTHDAY for a free Applebee’s Apple Pie Costume. Happy birthday, Poptropica!

For everyone else, Virus Hunter Island releases this Thursday, September 26! Members will also get to play the long-awaited bonus quest starting then, and the Virtual Virus Costume members’ bonus will be pulled from the Store. Remember, we’ve got a Virus Hunter Island Guide right here on the PHB.

Also, there’s an ad building for Scholastic’s Spirit Animals, the fantasy book series. (I found it on Ghost Story Island.) Inside, it’s a common room where you can see other players, but also be able to customize and interact with various characters from the books and their powers.

spiritanimalsad

On the first floor is Abeke (left) and her Uraza power which temporarily turns everyone into a leopard, Conor (right) and his Briggan Storm which flashes lightning and brings his wolf on the screen, and next to him a green-and-yellow-plated winged helmet you can customize.

On the second floor is Rollan (right) whom you can talk to for the Essix (hawk) Follower, as well as Meilin (left) and her Stealthy Jhi power which temporarily makes the room blink black. On the third floor are links to the Spirit Animals website.

What do you say your spirit animal is? Mine, of course, is the almighty fish. :D

Poptropolis Games 2013 is on the rise, and with it, two exciting new events: Octopus Volleyball and Volcano Race! And what a big cephalopod we’ve got here

The Poptropica Creators also referenced the 2013 movie Gravity in one of their posts this week, suggesting that the idea may be similar to the plot of Lunar Colony Island. How cool would a Poptropica film be? Poptropica islands may well be movie-worthy material!

The PHB’s 5th Annual Halloween Costume Competition

5thPHB halloween

You read right! Now for the fifth year in a row, the Poptropica Help Blog will be running a Halloween-themed Poptropica costume contest, in which you flaunt your eeriest Poptropica fashion and see how it stacks up with the competition.

Ten winners will be selected to have their costumes featured in the PHB’s popular Costumes page, plus they’ll have their costumes featured on the PHB’s front page when the winners are announced on Halloween (October 31, when the contest ends)! Read on for more details.

Before you rush out to put together your masterpiece, please keep these rules in mind:

  1. IDEAS: Be original! We like to see that you’ve put effort into creating something spooky yet fashionable for the season, so simply copying (as opposed to mixing and matching) will probably hurt your chances. There are some great costume parts at the ghoul gathering from the end of the Haunted House quest from the Store, but be creative and search in other places too!
  2. DON’T CHANGE: Keep your costume intact until after the winners are announced. If you change your costume back, we may not get to see your brilliant entry! If you don’t want to keep the costume on your main account, you can create a new one and post that instead.
  3. ENTERING: After you’ve created your costume, here’s how you should post your entry: go to the Avatar Studio, type in your username, click Load, click on the Link to highlight it, right-click and choose Copy, go to the comments section on this post, right-click and choose Paste, type in your comment and submit so we can view your costume by clicking the link! Name your costume and post the username if you want. If you are having problems with the Avatar Studio, just post the username so we can check it. You may submit as many different entries as you like, but you can only win a maximum of one time (out of the 10 winners to be chosen).

(side note: the competition banner above features jameskiro’s spooky party clown, one of the winners last year. other past winners can also be viewed on the costumes page!)

*hisses*

good luck!

How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop? The new Tootsie Roll ad game (which I found on Early Poptropica) has you going around a forest to ask various animals the question. Beware of the bees and make sure you get to Mr. Cow, Turtle, Fox, & Owl before time is up! Speaking of which
 this is what the fox says?!

whatdoesthefoxsay

When you get to Mr. Owl, he’ll bite his candy before getting to the center, and you’ll win a Tootsie Roll Pop (which comes in blue, orange, and red) and Tootsie Roll Rain Power (which rains down brown Tootsie Roll tubes)! Press the space bar while holding the pop and count how many licks it takes to reach the center (the number varies).

There’s also an ad for the Babymouse book series, which I found on Time Tangled. On the second floor, you can pick up the Queen of the World power, which simply flashes an image of Babymouse on top of the world.

And now for a couple of this week’s Daily Pop sneak peeks! In case the Tootsie Rolls weren’t enough to sate your appetite, we’ll be seeing eggs and ice cream, too

Egg Hunt – Be careful. There’s no candy in there.

Soft Serve – We all scream for froyo.

Also, remember that the PHB is hosting its 5th Annual Halloween Costume Competition this month! We’ve been receiving lots of spectacularly spooky entries, but there’s still time to join in! Poptropica livestream & Halloween costumes for FI

Hey everyone! The Stream Team over at Massively from the gaming website Joystiq.com will be hosting a Poptropica livestream this Friday at 4pm Eastern time – and a few Poptropica Creators may be tuning in to talk and take questions from viewers, which means it’s your chance to talk to a Creator!

Beau is going to show off a really neat kid’s browser-based game called Poptropica. If you like bright colors, adventure, and adorable characters, then check out this beginner’s guide!

If you’re planning to check it out, we’d love to hear about how it goes in the comments! What questions do you want to ask the Creators?

UPDATE: The livestream is now over, but you can view the archived video at Massively! You can listen in on Beau Hindman commenting on the game with a few of Poptropica’s Creators: developer Jordan Leary, senior artist Nate Greenwall, and senior producer Mitch Krpata. Here were a few interesting things that were mentioned:

  1. Beau asks about player housing – there’s a pause and then the Creators answer not currently, but it’s “something we’re playing with
 that we know our fans want
 do it when we can do it in a way that says Poptropica.”
  2. Poptropica is working on bringing all the current islands (such as Charlie & the Chocolate Factory) on mobile devices (first for iOS) in early 2014.
  3. Music and the new navigation will be added to all the islands in the future.
  4. Poptropica has an official Twitter account, but it’s more of an industry account than for users.
  5. The Creators also check what readers say on fan blogs! And when asked about costume contests for players, fan blogs were mentioned again (in fact, the PHB has one right now!).

In other news, the Poptropica iOS game Forgotten Islands has a free update available! Some new Halloween wear was added to the closet so you could dress in style for the season. And if you want a guide for the game, check out the PHB’s Forgotten Islands Walkthrough (with tons of pictures)!

Speaking of spooky fashion, have you entered the PHB’s 5th Annual Halloween Costume Competition yet? You’ve only got until next Thursday, when winners will be announced on Halloween! There have been some spectacular entries, but there’s still time for more, so enter if you dare!

When you’re done, you’ll be awarded a Reggie Costume (looks similar to the red turkey but has a purple head) and S.T.E.V.E Power (the white egg-shaped machine descends onscreen).

Speaking of birds, let’s take a look at a few of the Daily Pops from this week, starting with the one of a feathered fiend of course:

In other news, if you missed the Poptropica livestream with a few of the Creators this Friday, you can check out the archived video on Massivelytv! They mentioned some interesting things, which I posted about, most notably that there are plans to bring the online version of Poptropica to mobile devices in early 2014.

And lastly, the PHB’s 5th Annual Halloween Costume Competition will be ending soon, as winners will be announced next Thursday in time for Halloween! There’s still a few days left to squeeze in an entry – so do so if you dare!

Out of over eighty haunting entries submitted, the list has been narrowed down to 10 doombringers who have rightfully earned their spot on the PHB’s front page for the time being and our Costumes page for eternity! Say hello to

Zombie Possessed Demon Killer (Cool Octopus)

Zombies and devils, that is one frightening face. (For those wondering, it comes from the 2012 Hotel Transylvania ad.) The roped torso is also a nice touch to the killer theme.

cooloctopus

Rouge et Noire (Elphangor & Edalfrey)

(The costume was submitted by Elphangor and may have been inspired by Edalfrey.) Rouge et Noire, or red and black in French, appears to be a brilliantly scarier version of the villain Black Widow.

elphangor&edalfrey

Mad Robot Scientist (Pixel)

While experimenting with trying to attain immortality (the ability to live forever) for humanity, this evil scientist had an accident with the machinery
 and the golden electronics took over.

pixel

Crusty Curmudgeon (HPuterpop)

This guy is crusty all right
 pie-crusty and grouchy-crusty! Wouldn’t you be if you ended up with smoke sizzling in your hair and jam on your face? Love the alliteration in the name as well.

hputerpop

More-Video-Games Zombie (Comical Turtle)

So this is what happens when the apocalypse hits and one hasn’t played quite enough video games to prepare for it
 now he’s sleep-deprived, drooling, and bitten.

comicalturtle

Skull-faced Sorcerer (mjecuizon)

This practitioner of witchcraft sure has mastered the appearance of a spooky spellcaster! If that skull-face or skull-sword isn’t enough to scare you away, the itsy bitsy spider at the tip of the hat might.

mjecuizon

I Died Chewing the Trash (superniceywhitepaw)

Halloween brings forth a ton of weirdos, but nothing says stay-away-from-me louder than some greasy guy digging for some grub in the garbage. And then rotting with it when he dies of food poisoning.

superniceywhitepaw

Vampire Grandpa (Spotted Dragon)

He may not sparkle like Edward Cullen, but this pale-skinned classy senior citizen has been around long enough to taste the blood of more generations than you’d like to think.

spotteddragon

Cheshire Cat (Ria/Purple Flame)

Based on the creepily-grinning feline from Disney’s 1951 film Alice in Wonderland, this Cheshire Cat puts a bright and unique spin on the typical cat costumes roaming Poptropica.

riapurpleflame

Witch (cheriebell1)

This (literally) hair-rising witch isn’t too happy
 her pet cat vanished after a spell gone wrong, leaving her with a permanently grouchy expression and the refusal to change out of her old-fashioned dress.

cheriebell1

Thanks to everyone who entered. We hope you had fun creating your costume! And congratulations to all the winners – enjoy the honor of having your Costumes featured.

And there’s a bigger piece of news that has spawned

Hey, remember Mocktropica?

You know, that post when I talked about how the Creators could be parodying themselves?

No? Well, here’s my post back in June when I discovered it.

Well, the Creators finally announced it with everything but the Poptropica Store Members Only Gold Cards and the exact date of its arrival. Here’s the video trailer for the island:

(Is that a reference to the weird YouTube viral video “Cows & Cows & Cows” I see in the trailer?)

So I was right when I said that the Creators are parodying themselves (yes!). Anyway, the info page has some interesting info including the island’s approximate release time

Tired Programmer Avatar Mocktropica Island

Brave Tomato: Looks like someone missed their morning coffee

Coming mid-December!

Poptropica is under new management, and it’s falling apart at the seams! The newest Island isn’t finished, the staff is nowhere to be found, and you can’t take two steps without running into a game-breaking bug. Get ready to go behind the scenes for your most important adventure yet — because this time, you’ve got to save Poptropica itself!

An island about making an island? ISLAND-CEPTION! Time to break the fourth wall, peeps, and save our game! (Although I wonder if this is just an excuse to get away with ACTUAL bugs and glitches that can occur
)

Speaking of saving our game, here’s an odd bonus quest that
 may bring in a new villain! O.O

Brave Tomato: Who’s that? And why did I think he was a girl when I first saw the pic?

Bonus Quest

A rogue programmer has conquered a rival website and now rules it like a king. You must venture outside the safety of Poptropica to bring him back — if you can last long enough to find him!

Who’s that? Is the rival website MegaFightingBots.com, that battling robots game showed in the island trailer? So many questions, yet so little answers

By the way, the Creators just made that website real, although coming soon. This is what you’d see on the website:

Anyway, be sure to check out Printable Poster and the Desktop Wallpaper, as well as some sneak peeks of the island right here (or also on our Mocktropica Trivia page!):

Brave Tomato: The rival website?

So
 I almost forgot about Mocktropica Island
 Wow
 seeing this’ll be the last new island of 2013, this should be interesting

What do you guys think?

BT out!
